April 2, 2019 marks the twelfth annual observation of World Autism Awareness Day.  As described by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, World Autism Awareness Day exists to: “highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.”

Parent Strategies for Helping Children with Autism Cope with Transitions and Changing Routines

Transitions from one activity to the next can be difficult for any child, especially if they are being asked to leave a preferred activity to instead do something they need to do. A new parent questionnaire is the first test designed to gauge anxiety in children with autismAbout 40 percent of autistic children have anxiety, compared with roughly 25 percent of typical children. But anxiety may manifest in unusual ways in autistic children, such as a fear of flushing toilets or of exposed pipes, making it difficult to spot.

WHYY, April 19.

Young people with autism have access to job training at vastly different rates depending on where they live, a new study shows. A team at Drexel University looked at youth with autism on a state-by-state basis. In Pennsylvania, for instance, 90 percent of those eligible were accessing vocational training. But that rate dropped to 50 percent across the river in New Jersey.
